Vaccinations: Protecting Your Pitbull Puppy's Health

Vaccinations play a vital role in keeping your pitbull puppy safe from a variety of infectious diseases.

Core Vaccinations

These are essential for all puppies, regardless of their lifestyle:

Canine Distemper Virus (CDV)

A contagious virus that affects the respiratory, digestive, and nervous systems. It can be life-threatening without proper vaccination.

Canine Parvovirus (CPV)

A serious intestinal virus that causes severe vomiting and diarrhea. Puppies are especially vulnerable and need protection early on.

Canine Adenovirus (CAV-2)

Rabies

Bordetella bronchiseptica

The bacteria behind kennel cough, a contagious respiratory illness. Important if your puppy will spend time in places like kennels, doggy daycare, or dog parks.

Canine Influenza

Protects against certain flu strains common among dogs. Recommended for puppies who frequently interact with other dogs.

Leptospirosis

A bacterial infection that can affect dogs and people, often spread through contaminated water or soil. This vaccine depends on local risk factors.

Lyme Disease

Caused by bacteria transmitted by ticks, this vaccine is recommended if you live in or visit areas where Lyme disease is common.

Typical Vaccination Timeline

6-8 Weeks

First combination vaccine (DHPP covering Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza), Bordetella if needed.

10-12 Weeks

Second DHPP dose, Leptospirosis if recommended.

14-16 Weeks

Third DHPP dose, Rabies vaccination, plus Bordetella or Canine Influenza if not given earlier.

Annual Boosters

After the initial series, your puppy will need booster shots annually or every few years, depending on the vaccine and local laws.
